The Rev. Dr. Jennnifer Harvey

The Rev. Dr. Jennifer Harvey is an award-winning author, educator, and public speaker who seeks to create space for justice-filled, transformative connections that nurture a world where everyone can flourish. Racial justice and white antiracism, in particular, have been central commitments through her career—shaping her personal, civic and professional life. Jen’s newest book Antiracism as Daily Practice: Refuse Shame, Change White Communities, and Help Create a Just World explores how white Americans can change their everyday behaviors to confront racism in their spheres of influence.

Jen’s previous books include the New York Times bestseller, Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust America and Dear White Christians: For Those Still Longing for Racial Reconciliation. Jen’s ability to “be with” people grappling with guilt and shame while boldly naming the moral urgency of white participation against racism has earned her countless invitations to speak to broad audiences, appear in media, and contribute to academic and public outlets. Her essay Are We Raising Racists? spent nearly a week on the New York Times “ten most read pieces” list. She has written for CNN, Huffington Post, Sojourners, The Conversation and countless other venues. She’s also been a guest on Good Morning America, CNN’s Town Hall Against Racism with Sesame Treat, The Tamron Hall Show, as well as NPRs Weekend Edition of All Things Considered and other radio.

Dr. Harvey is the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean at Garrett-Evangelical Seminary. Previously, she served as a Professor of Religion and the Faculty Director of the Crew Scholars Program—an academic excellence and leadership development program for students of color—at Drake University. She graduated from Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York with a Ph.D. in Christian Social Ethics in 2004 and a Master of Divinity degree in 1998. Jen is ordained in the American Baptist Churches (USA).
